Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Update

Silent Auction, Luncheon, Appearances by Hall of Famers Highlight Weekend
 
Springfield, Mass. – The Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament takes place on Saturday, November 19, and Sunday, November 20 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut highlighted by eight schools in two four-team brackets.  

In addition to the games, the Hall of Fame will hold a special silent auction throughout the weekend in the main concourse of the arena.  Proceeds from the auction will assist the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame – a non-profit organization – to continue to celebrate the game of basketball through its college tournaments including the Tip-Off Tournament, Holiday Showcase and Hall of Fame Shootout, as well as its Spalding Hoophall Classic high school event.  Proceeds will also continue to help the general operations of the Hall of Fame.  The auction will run from 11 am until the end of the games each day.  Winners will be notified on Monday, November 21st.

Another highlight of the Tip-Off Tournament will be the Basketball Hall of Famers in attendance at the games. Hall of Famers scheduled to attend include Dan Issel, Nancy Lieberman, C.M. Newton, Tommy Heinsohn and Cliff Hagan.

Finally, the weekend will begin with a Tip-Off Luncheon on Friday, November 18th at the XL Center in Hartford featuring UConn head coach and Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun.  Tickets are still available by contacting Jason Fiddler at 413-231-5540.

The Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off teams include Long Island University (Northeast), Marist College (MAAC), Old Dominion University (CAA), Penn State University (Big Ten), Radford University (Big South), University of Kentucky (SEC), University of South Florida (Big East) and the University of Vermont (America East).

Holiday Showcase adds fourth game match up between Fairfield University and Old Dominion

Event adds fourth game match up between Fairfield University and Old Dominion

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today the addition of Fairfield University and Old Dominion to the 2011 Holiday Showcase schedule held at the MassMutual Center on Friday, December 9th. The event will include featured match-ups from all three NCAA Divisions, with a Division I doubleheader including UMass, Siena, Fairfield University and Old Dominion. 

“We are excited to work in conjunction with three of our neighbor institutions as well as new MAAC friends to develop a great celebration of college basketball for Western Massachusetts,” said John L. Doleva, President & CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  “The Hall of Fame hopes that the Holiday Showcase becomes an annual mainstay in our basketball community.”

The Basketball Hall of Fame Holiday Showcase will tip-off with Division II schools AIC and Philadelphia University at 3:00 pm. Philadelphia is coached by Herb Magee, the all-time NCAA wins leader at any level and was recently Enshrined into the Hall of Fame this past summer. A Division III matchup between Springfield College and Trinity College will follow at 5:00 pm finishing with a Division I doubleheader. The 7:00 pm game will feature UMass and Siena with the final game between Fairfield and Old Dominion University starting around 9:00 pm.

Tickets will be priced at $20 and $10. Tickets will be good for all four games and go on sale Tuesday October 18 at 10:00 AM via Ticketmaster outlets or the MassMutual Center box office during business hours.

Hall of Famer Edward 'Easy Ed' Macauley Passes Away at Age 83

The Basketball Hall of Fame mourns the loss of Edward 'Easy Ed' Macauley, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83.  Enshrined in 1960 as the youngest person ever to be inducted into the Hall of Fame at 32, Macauley was a seven-time NBA All-Star and three-time All-NBA First-Team selection (1951, 1952 and 1953).  He played for the St. Louis Bombers, Boston Celtics and also helped guide the St. Louis Hawks to a championship in 1958.

"Ed Macauley will be missed by fans who watched his exciting style of basketball starting with an NIT championship at St. Louis University and into the NBA," said John L. Doleva, President & CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  "He became a legend in his community and will always be remembered as a pioneer on the basketball court."

Hartford to Host First Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Luncheon on November 18th

Featuring Hall of Fame Coach of the Defending Champion UConn Huskies Jim Calhoun

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today that it will host its first-ever event in Hartford this month, headlined by defending National Champion Head Coach and Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun as the guest speaker at the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Luncheon on Friday, November 18th at the XL Center in Hartford to commence an exciting weekend of college basketball games.

“We are excited to hold this Basketball Hall of Fame event in the City of Hartford and to have the coach of the UConn Huskies and a 2005 Hall of Fame Enshrinee on hand to help celebrate our annual Tip-Off Tournament,” said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.  “Coach Calhoun has had an incredible career as a coach and community leader -- and has always been a great advocate for the Hall of Fame over the years.”

A portion of the proceeds from the event will be presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament Luncheon Committee to the Ritter Family Foundation.

“The Ritter Family Foundation awards students with scholarships in order to further their education after high school,” said Frank Colaccino, CEO of The Colvest Group, Ltd, who is also a Trustee of the Hall of Fame’s Board and Committee Chair for the 2011 Tip-Off Tournament Luncheon Committee.  “We commend the Ritter Family for their service and continued support throughout the Hartford community.”

The Tip-Off Tournament Luncheon Committee members also include Greg Butler (Northeast Utilities) Nuala E. Droney (Robinson & Cole LLP), Martha A. Finkel (WebsterBank), AnnMarie Harding (Max’s Tavern) and John L. Ritter (First New England Capital III).

“We are thrilled that the Basketball Hall of Fame has decided to host this event here in Hartford with Coach Calhoun and to give back to our community through the Ritter Family Foundation,” said Butler, who is the Senior Vice President & General Counsel at Northeast Utilities and also a member of the Hall’s Board of Governors.  “We hope that it is the first of many more events from such a well-respected organization.”

The Basketball Hall of Fame’s Tip-Off Tournament is an annual NCAA men’s basketball exempt tournament sponsored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference that will take place on Saturday, November 19, and Sunday, November 20 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. ESPN networks will televise four of the games.
