SPRINGFIELD, MASS. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will join the Las Vegas community this evening in honoring the memory of late University of Nevada, Las Vegas basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian.

The lights of many casinos on the Las Vegas strip are expected to be dimmed tonight in Jerry Tarkanian’s honor, a tribute reserved for a select crowd such as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and John F. Kennedy. The dimming of the lights is set to follow the conclusion of the UNLV basketball home game at 10:30 PM.

This evening, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame’s dome will glow a shade of scarlet, the primary color of UNLV athletics and Tarkanian’s Runnin’ Rebels.

As the Head Coach of UNLV from 1973-1992, Tarkanian nicknamed his team the “Runnin’ Rebels” and developed a unique up-tempo style of play.  He led his team to four Final Fours, winning a National Championship in 1990. He finished his career with an overall coaching record of 706-198 and was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013.
