While other referees blew the whistle, Ernest Quigley used his high-pitched voice to control the game. One of the most respected referees of his era, Quigley was also known for this colorful refereeing style. Athletically gifted, Quigley was a star athlete at the University of Kansas, playing under the legendary James Naismith. During his 40-year career, Quigley officiated more than 15,000 games, ten consecutive AAU tournaments, and logged more than 100,000 miles a year. Ernie served as supervisor of NCAA tournament officials from 1940 to 1942. In 1944, Quigley moved off the courts to become director of athletics at Kansas, his alma mater. Also a gifted baseball umpire, Ernie umped in the National League from 1913 to 1945, including six World Series.
