Born in New York just a few blocks from famed Madison Square Garden, Rick Pitino fell in love at an early age with the game of basketball. He was an accomplished player at St. Dominic High School in New York and at the University of Massachusetts before embarking on a coaching career which began as an assistant at the University of Hawaii in 1974. Pitino is the first coach to win an NCAA national championship at two different schools and also the first to take three different schools to the NCAA Final Four. His first Final Four came in 1987 at Providence College. He then went on to reach at least one Final Four in the next three decades including three at the University of Kentucky. His 1995-96 Kentucky squad earned the veteran coach his first national championship and the second national title came in 2013 when his University of Louisville team overcame a devastating injury to dance on top of the podium. The charismatic Pitino is also an accomplished speaker and author, with his Success is a Choice becoming a national best seller.
