Peter J. "Pete" Carril Enshrined 1997 Bethlehem, PA Born: July 10, 1930 Biography Even though Pete Carril's players might have been shorter, thinner, or less muscular than their competitors, Carril's cunning brand of basketball made the Princeton's Tigers a difficult opponent to play. Carril won using strategy and textbook basics -- an unselfish offense and team defense. Regimented, disciplined, and fundamentally sound, Carril's teams led the nation in scoring defense fourteen of his last 21 seasons coaching, including the last eight in a row. During his 29 seasons, Princeton won thirteen Ivy League championships and earned thirteen postseason tournament bids (11 NCAA, 2 NIT). In 1975, Carril led Princeton to the Ivy League's only NIT championship. Upon retirement in 1997, Carril was the only Division I coach to record 500 wins without ever providing athletic scholarships.
