Biography

During her career as head coach at the University of Tennessee, Pat Head Summitt created a legacy of success and integrity unparalleled in women's basketball. Named the Naismith Coach of the Century, Summitt led the Lady Vols to 31 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including 18 Final Fours (four AIAW), and 13 title games. Leading the Lady Vols to national titles in 1987 and 1989, she was named SEC Coach of the Year two times in that span and eight times overall. Dominating the 1990s with four NCAA national championships, during the 1997-98 season she led the Lady Vols to a perfect 39-0 record. In total, she coached UT to 32 Southeast Conference titles and more than 1,000 wins. She retired as the all-time winningest coach in NCAA history. Summitt also coached U.S. teams to gold medals at the Olympics and Pan American Games.
