Biography

The all-time leading scorer in Olympic basketball history, Oscar Schmidt thrilled basketball fans with his quick-trigger approach and long-range shooting. His smooth style earned him the nickname Mao Santa, meaning Holy Hand, and his native Brazil loved when the big forward caught fire with the hot hand. Schmidt began his basketball career in 1975 at only 17, and by the time he was 20, the Brazilian national team was building its entire offense around the sharpshooter. In 1980, still in his early 20s, Schmidt made the first of five consecutive appearances in the Olympics. In all, Schmidt posted more than 1,000 points in Olympic competition, including a ridiculous 42.3 points per game average in 1988 when Brazil finished fifth in the final standings. The 1987 Pan-American Games showed the entire world how good the big Brazilian was when he put up 46 points against the United States in a thrilling 120-115 come from behind victory. Schmidt finally retired in 2003 at age 45. He is the unofficial all-time scoring leader in basketball history.
