Biography

Known for startling players and entertaining spectators, Pat Kennedy was one of the most spirited referees in basketball. Despite his animated style, Kennedy never lost control of a game. He began officiating in 1928 at age 21, and worked nearly 4,000 games during his career. Kennedy's flamboyance was at times annoying to players and coaches, but even his harshest critics had to admit that he was consistently fair in his calls. During his 32-year career, he officiated in the Ivy League, American Basketball League, Metropolitan Basketball League, National Basketball League, Basketball Association of America (BAA), and for six years with the Harlem Globetrotters. Kennedy retired from the hardwood in 1946 and served as the BAA's and NBA's supervisor of referees until 1950.
