Biography

Guy V. Lewis was the leader of the University of Houston Cougars for many of the program’s greatest moments. From 1956 to 1986, the great winner led Houston to nearly 600 victories including five NCAA Final Four appearances in two different decades and three straight from 1982 to 1984. The Father of Phi Slama Jama – one of college basketball’s most enduring teams with their high-flying assault on the rim – Lewis tutored future Basketball Hall of Famers Elvin Hayes, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Clyde Drexler during their collegiate careers. The 1968 and 1983 Associated Press National Coach of the Year recruited and welcomed the first African-American student-athletes to the Houston basketball program before the era of Civil Rights. In 1968, Lewis was the architect of the Game of the Century, a showdown between No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Houston inside the Houston Astrodome that drew more than 52,000 fans with millions more watching on television nationwide.
