Edward A. "Ed" Wachter
Lanky, aggressive, quick, and versatile, center Ed Wachter was a skillful and accurate jump and free-throw shooter. Skipping high school and college, Wachter played pro ball from 1899 to 1924. "Eddie" was consistently among the scoring leaders in his leagues and played on more championship teams than anyone else in his generation. His first taste of victory came in 1905 when he led Haverhill into the New England Basketball Association playoffs. Wachter's greatest contributions came with the Troy Trojans, a team he began in 1905 as the Company E team of Schenectady, New York. Known for their new ways of passing, fast-breaking offense, and man-to-man defense, the Trojans were one of the early dynasties, capturing five league titles and going 29-0 during a 1915 barnstorming tour. When Wachter retired, he moved on to spend 25 fruitful years coaching at five different colleges including Harvard, Williams, and Albany (NY) State.
